Treatment Methods
In order to best treat each individual child, adolescent, and family, we tailor our approach to your unique concerns and goals. Possible treatment methods we may use are evidence-based treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Treatment (DBT) as well as traditional art and talk therapies.
Child/Adolescent-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that our feelings, thoughts and behaviors are connected and can affect how one acts and reacts. CBT explores this relationship and offers a practical, skills-based approach to learning alternative responses.
DBT Skills Training for Children & Adolescents:
We offer Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills training for children and adolescents who are struggling to manage “out of control” feelings and behaviors. DBT skills training teaches social skills/assertiveness, distress tolerance and mindfulness.
Mindfulness-Based Therapies for Children & Adolescents:
Mindfulness-based therapy uses both mindfulness-based exercises, behavioral-exercises and metaphors to encourage children, adolescents and parents to manage their stress, discomfort and pain through a focused, calm and confident awareness of oneself and one’s surroundings.
Children, Adolescents & Families With Medical/Health Issues:
When working with medically-ill patients and their families, we work collaboratively with medical providers and other involved professionals, such as school staff, to provide effective and comprehensive care. We use a variety of therapeutic techniques to help children and adolescents cope with and understand his/her or a family member’s illness and related difficulties, overcome procedural anxiety, adhere to their medical regimes and/or adjust to chronic illness.
Parent, Caregiver, and Family Involvement:
Parent/caregiver and family involvement in therapy is essential to the treatment success of your child. To help generalize the new skills and behaviors developed in therapy to all parts of your child’s life, it is critical that parents/caregivers and family practice these outside of the therapy session. We will work collaboratively with you to create a plan and goals that will enable you to support and assist your child to use his/her new skills.
